Join the Cashiers Historical Society and Cashiers Community Library for Aunt Fannie’s Cabin: A story of the Lumber Industry in the Southern Appalachians during the early 20th Century.
Philip and Shelby Gennett will discuss the history of the lumber industry in southern Appalachia. Their grandfather, Andrew Gennett, owned a tract of lumber along the Chattooga River watershed. He became a seasoned and innovative lumberman who felled various trees across southern Appalachia. Philip and Shelby will discuss their family's legacy in the lumber industry, how that industry shaped Cashiers and the surrounding areas, and the relationship between logging and conservation. Sound Wormy, a Memoir of Andrew Gennett, will also be shared. This memoir recounts Gennett's experiences in the timber industry and his dedication to forest conservation, weaving together logging lore with portraits of the southern mountains and their people.
