Arts & Entertainment
Date: Thursday, October 17, 2019 07:00 PM

Venue: Camp Merrie-Woode

A screening of the documentary film Lillian Smith: Breaking the Silence, followed by a Q&A session with director Hal Jacobs.

Lillian Smith: Breaking the Silence is a 50-minute documentary about the life and work of groundbreaking Georgia writer and activist Lillian Smith (1887-1966). Created by Hal and Henry Jacobs, the film explores the life of Smith who was a southern leader in denouncing segregation and supporting racial and gender equality for several decades—paying a heavy price for it. Smith left a lasting legacy in the literary and Civil Rights communities, a legacy that is still relevant today.

Lillian Smith was a friend and colleague of Camp Merrie-Woode’s founder, Dammie Day. Both were likeminded, progressive women who owned and directed summer camps for girls near each other in the 1920s – 1940s.

Doors will open at 6:30pm. A dessert reception will follow.
